The other night my bro in law and I were talking about paranormal-type things, and he brought up the story of the strange encounter I had way back when I was still a teenager. He asked me to tell it again, and I've told it here before, but as always who cares?
Every Wednesday we'd get together at my church for dinner and fun afterwards, usually volleyball. That particular evening I took my friend Debra to the airport for a flight to New York, so I left after dinner. Her flight was delayed so I stayed with her until it left, and by the time I got back everyone was gone.
I got into my VW Squareback to go home but when I pressed the clutch it went all the way to the floor with no resistance. I thought the clutch cable had broken but I checked it and it seemed to be tight, but for some reason it wouldn't engage. I started it again but it was completely loose.
I went to a payphone and called a few friends but they were all out so I called dad. I knew he was in a meeting and wouldn't be able to come get me for over an hour, so I left a message with mom. This was decades before cellphones.
I had some time to kill so I sat on the wall out back for a while and then decided to take a walk. It was in a fairly safe part of town, although you wouldn't want to walk more than a few blocks in any direction at night.
The church, South Highland Presbyterian, sits on Highland Avenue and 21st street. It's a beautiful church and the immediate area is nice. I walked down the alley on the right side of the church and took a right onto Highland.
There used to be a police station about three blocks away and you could clearly see all the way to it. I remember looking at it and I didn't see anyone else, but the next time I looked up I saw a man and a woman approaching me from half a block away. It was like they appeared out of thin air. I figured maybe they'd gotten out of a car and somehow I hadn't noticed, but it was freaky.
They walked up to me and said hello. They were immaculately dressed in all black...shirts, pants, jackets and boots. The woman had straight blond hair and she was stunning. The guy had dark hair and he was good looking too. They looked to be in their late 20s.
They looked completely out of place for a Wednesday night at 10:00 in this town. There were no gala events going on that night and there were no exclusive clubs in the area. It was like they'd teleported from New York or something. There was a different vibe to them...like they were foreign in more ways than one.
They were very polite at first. They asked me if there was a gas station nearby and I said yes. At the time there was one less than a mile away. I told them to take a left at the end of the block, stay on that road and they'd run right into it. It was an uphill walk most of the way but they'd be there in twenty minutes or so.
"What if we get lost?" they asked. "You can't get lost" I said. "Take a left right here and just stay on that road. It's open 24 hours and it's lit up like the Fourth of July and you'll see it on your right." "But what if we can't find it?" they asked. "You can't miss it" I said.
They kept going on about it until I realized that they were either messing with me or they were the dumbest people I'd met in a while, which I didn't think was the case. "Take a left...keep walking...good luck and have a nice evening" I said, and turned to walk away.
"Wait a minute" they said. I turned back around. The whole time they'd been staring at me but out of nowhere they stared directly into my eyes and started talking to me in this weird language that I couldn't begin to understand. It didn't sound like any language I'd heard before, and there were odd sounds like frequencies.
They were both speaking at the same time and staring into my eyes without blinking. Whatever language it was they were speaking it earnestly, as if they were trying to tell me something important, even though they must've known I couldn't understood a word, if they even were words. It was so freaky but it was so utterly fascinating at the same time that I stood there listening, trying to make a.tiny bit of sense out of what was happening. I hadn't felt threatened by them at all up until that point, and still wasn't, although it was creepy to say the least.
Then things changed. Their eyes turned black, and I don't mean just the pupils...even the whites of their eyes went solid black. I get that that sounds crazy, and most people would just dismiss it or try to explain it away, but it happened. In my way of thinking that was straight up demonic, and it was time to split. I didn't say anything but turned and walked away. They were still speaking to me but I didn't look back.
For what it's worth, any time you see a movie or TV show where someone's eyes turn black, it always represents demonic possession. I was totally spooked although I wasn't terrified, if that makes sense, but I wasn't about to screw around with what I thought were demonically possessed humans, or just plain demons. I walked up the alley to my car. I thought the strangeness was over but I was wrong. What happened next was possibly the weirdest 45 minutes of my life.
I sat on a wall by my car, and waited for my dad. It was quiet, but then I heard the clip-clop of their boots walking up the alley. I thought maybe they were just going a different way, but they got right to the corner of the building and stopped. After a few seconds they started walking back down the alley. I figured they'd take the proper left and go about their business but that didn't happen.
About a minute later I heard them coming up the sidewalk on 21st street on the other side of the church. I decided that either they were dumb as posts and really really lost, possessed or not, or they were messing with me, and I was pretty sure it was the latter. Just like in the alley they got just to the corner of the building and stopped. There were some tall bushes going around the corner. They could've peered through the bushes at me but I couldn't have seen them.
After a few seconds they turned and went back down the sidewalk, and a minute later they came walking back up the alley. Again they stopped right at the corner of the building. If they'd have taken one more step I'd have seen them. They repeated the cycle several more times. I wasn't as frightened as some people might have been but I can't say I wasn't creeped to the fullest extent.
Actually I'd have been more afraid if I didn't think they were demons, as strange as that may sound. I knew that if they were demons I could invoke the name of Jesus if they were to come at me or whatever, but that might not work on regular humans. You can't put anything past people who'd go to that much trouble just to freak someone out, but somehow I never felt like I was in danger. It was nuts though, but fascinating at the same time.
As they were walking up the alley again I heard a car engine and saw lights coming up the alley. I knew it was my dad. As soon as he got out of the car I mentioned the people in black. "What people?" he asked. " Oh, shit" I thought. They were walking up the alley and he'd have driven right by them. I knew there was a staircase going down below street level to the nursery. I figured they must've ducked down in there when dad drove up. I ran around the corner and looked down into the stairwell but they were gone. I tried the door and it was locked.
They couldn't have run away. I was certain they'd gone down the stairwell because that's the only thing that made sense, but apparently they vanished into thin air. Maybe they were Aliens or ghosts, but I think they were demons, and this is one of those times where the most bizarre explanation makes the most sense. Again, many people don't believe in demons, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Our beliefs prove nothing.
I was completely sober, and I didn't hallucinate the whole thing. At the time there was a restaurant next door to the church and there were several window tables maybe 30' away. People were staring at them because they didn't look like they were from around here. I can't quite describe how unusual they were...they were impeccably dressed and extremely good looking. They almost had a glow about them. They gave off a vibe that I've never felt before or since.
I didn't say anything else to dad that night about the odd couple, but when we discussed it later he agreed that they were demons. As a final item of weirdness, when dad asked me to show him what was wrong with the car, I started it and it went perfectly into gear like nothing was ever wrong, and I'd tried for half an hour to fix it. There were never any issues with the clutch before or after that night. It's one thing for the clutch to go out but it's quite another to have it seemingly repair itself.
Who or what were the people in black? How could they apparently vanish into thin air? Where did they go? I wish I knew. Were they actual demons? I think so but I can' say for sure. I get that it sounds crazy, and you certainty don't have to believe it. I know what I saw, and like most of my stories, no matter how crazy they sound there have usually been witnesses, in this case the people in the restaurant, although they couldn't hear what was going on.
That was the second wildest thing that ever happened to me. It was crazy as hell but also incredibly interesting, although one experience like that is enough. Amazing things have happened to me...I don't know why but for the most part I've embraced them. Why fight it? Stay safe, and if you ever see anyone's eyes turn black, go the other way.
